Unfortunately while it may be the British way to use knives to scoop things out of jars, it's also a skill that must be carefully crafted to be of any use. Arthur's own attempt at it was laughable at best, since it was jelly he was attempting to get out of the jar. And even when he managed that, it didn't spread as smoothly as the peanut butter. In fact, his roughness at trying to achieve the same results as she did ended up tearing a hole in the bread and flattening in the rest.
